THANKS FOR AN AMAZING YEAR, FOOLS!! SEE YOU AGAIN SOON!!
This year's medallion honors the Council of Unreason's very own Ironmonger! Read below for the fascinating history behind the design. |
What is an Ironmonger?
I’ve gotten this question often, obviously. In old England hardware stores were often originally known as ironmongeries. It was where you sourced your metal goods and other associated products. While it has largely fallen out of use, you can still find them named as such in more rural areas. The owner or operator of these stores were often referred to as Ironmongers. Being a third-generation owner of our family hardware store, 'Ironmonger' seemed to be an obvious choice of name when I was elected to The Council of Unreason for the St. John Fools of Misrule.
Since this year was my turn for the design of our medallion, I thought it appropriate to honor one of the original twelve great Merchant Companies of London, The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers. With their crest representing the trade of iron flanked by the mythical salamanders impervious to fire. Below in Old English I came up with the phrase "On Fultume Dysigra," which roughly translates to "in support of foolish men."
I thought this a fun way of illustrating not only my line of work but also my support of our unique organization with a nod to those that came before me.
Happy Mardi Gras 2026!
Your Ironmonger,
John Metevier
